When Alonso de Fonseca, Archbishop of Santiago, wanted to demonstrate his power to Pedro Madruga he selected this hill to build a fortress to keep an eye on the movements of the Soutomaior castle. The Castrizán castle, which was so called, was destroyed by Pedro Madruga when he returned from his captivity in Castille. A chapel was built in time at the same place in honour of Our Lady of Nieves. There is a religious procession held on the 5th of August on its premises. From A Peneda we can get a beautiful view of the entire place: the river Verdugo valleys, the Soutomaior woods and the San Simón inlet, and the island with the same name, the Rande straits and a sizeable area of the municipality of Redondela.Stone chapel erected to Our Lady of the Snow (Las Nieves) and built on the ruins of the old Castrizán castle.

Soutomaior castle was born as a defensive fort in the 12th century. It was refurbished many times over its history and some of these were forced due to circumstances such as in the 15th century when it was partially destroyed during the Irmandiños revolts. The restoration carried out by Pedro Álvarez de Soutomaior & Pedro Madruga, converted it into a residential castle, thereby giving importance to the comfort of the residents than to military use. The latest refurbishments were carried out by the Marquis de la Vega de Armijo in the 19th century. He got a garden built with most of the big trees seen today. A Neogothic styled ladies gallery was also built. The Marquise of Ayerbe, his niece, installed a clinic in a nearby building, which has been converted today into a rest house. It belongs to the Provincial Government of Pontevedra since the 1980s, who paid for its full restoration, including the old clinic. Besides its artistic and architectural value, the place fulfils a cultural function, since its halls are a venue for many meetings, congresses, artistic workshops and short-term exhibitions.Open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00 hours in winter and from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00 in the summer. The parish church celebrates its big feast on the day of Saint Salvador, when a procession is held with all saints from the church. The feast of St. Blaise is another of its big feasts. The set that comprises the church and its cemetery has an atrium surrounded by olive trees.Baroque style parish church of Soutomaior, a style that was prevailing in the 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross and has a facade with a projecting door and flanked by columns at two different heights.

Small fluvial beach with coarse sand that is quite near the medieval Comboa bridge. It is on the right hand bank of the river Verdugo, along a stretch where the river meanders slightly. The width of the river permits one to bathe in shallow waters, which is ideal for little children, or to wade into the deeper part of the river which flows swiftly. We can still notice the inflow of the tides at this point.

The Verdugo hanging bridge is just a few metres from the meeting point of the rivers Verdugo and Oitavén, which empties its water into the former. The bridge crosses the Verdugo at a place which forms a deep well, known as the Poza das Bestas, next to a little fluvial beach. If we follow the river for about a hundred metres, we come to the medieval Comboa bridge.Hanging bridge with metallic suspenders and with concrete supports at its ends. The floor is light and made from wooden planks. Not fit for vehicle crossing.

It is a 3 star hotel which occupies the building built by the Marquise of Ayerbe for a clinic annexed to the castle. The building was renovated and reconstructed in the 1980s. It was first a residence for important personalities from the province and was later destined for catering. It is now a singular hotel, which is open to the general public.The hotel has 12 double rooms, 3 suites, halls for banquets and meetings, restaurant service, cafeteria and car park.

The feast was started in 1987 and gives prominence to the best gastronomic product of Soutomaior, namely, the oyster. The fame of the oysters from these sand banks at Arcade is due to its excellent quality viands. After the end of the 20th century, when the autochthonous oyster was practically extinct, aquaculture production was initiated on oyster rafts where the species ostrea edulis is cultivated. This change did not alter the gastronomic value because the rich plankton of Vigo Bay is what feeds the oysters and can boast as the most demanded by the markets and dinner tables of Europe.Declared as an event of Tourist Interest. The actual gastronomic feast is preceded by a week of cultural and sports activities. These are organised by the town council and almost all restaurants from Arcade participate.

Small fine grain sandy beach situated between the fish landing site and another building that is quite near the port of Arcade. The beach is full of people during the summer season, since there are very few sandy places in the area.

The bridge crosses the river Verdugo just before discharging into Vigo Bay. It is located above saline waters that arise as a result of tides. The old road to Compostela passed through this bridge. The Pilgrim's Route to Santiago currently uses this bridge. The most interesting episode told about this bridge was when, around two hundred years ago, in a battle that took place there between the troops of Marshall Ney, who with an improvised army of residents from the region and the Literary Battalion, managed to defeat the Napoleonic troops during the War of Independence. According to the legend, they did it with the support of a wooden canon.A bridge of Medieval origin built on ten half point arches and supported by reinforced columns.

The bridge connects the Romariz neighbourhood to the Comboa one, both of which lie in the parish of Soutomaior. Following a path we arrive to the parish of Pontesampaio, after first passing by a fluvial beach at Comboa, to which you can actually travel from the sea using a small boat with an outboard engine taking care not to go aground during low tide on to the sand barrier that lies at the mouth of the river Verdugo.Medieval bridge built on three arches, two of which are mid point.

This is a parish church which was refurbished many times over the centuries and has left its imprint as Gothic and Baroque styles. The original Romanesque style can only be seen in its front facade.Parish church of St. James at Arcade. Its Romanesque style prevails despite the many later restorations and additions to the building.

A land with an area of 25 hectares with an extensive use over its 800 years of existence. Its garden was created in 1870 thanks to the planning ordered by the then owner of the castle, the Marquis de la Vega de Armijo. The project sought the development of a garden in which exotic species of trees, bushes, ornamental plants, as well as autochthonous varieties coexisted side by side. All of the above within a garden with a rationalist style, very much in use in palatial residences at the end of the 19th century. Its botanic collection is of great interest due to its diversity of species as well as because of the age and the size of some trees, not only with respect to autochthonous varieties but also those that come from the five continents, amongst which we can highlight sequoias, tree ferns, many types of Chile pines and cedar trees. Since the 1980's, when the castle became the asset of the Provincial Government of Pontevedra, the initial camellias collection, catalogued as one of the oldest in Galicia, became the starting point for the creation of one of the best camellias collections in the world, which includes more than five hundred specimens.Open all days of the year.
