Nigrán

The municipality of Nigrán is spread out over 35 square kilometres of land and is made up of seven parishes: Camos, Chandebrito, Panxón, Parada, Priegue, San Pedro da Ramallosa and Nigrán which is the main centre. It has over 16,000 inhabitants. Nigrán borders with the municipalities of Vigo to the East, with Gondomar to the South and Baiona to the West. To the North, it borders with Vigo Bay presenting a coastline that is sometimes uneven, like at Monteferro, and other times presents wide flat sandy areas like in the cases of Madorra, Area Fofa, Panxón and Praia América beaches. The latter is one of the best beaches in Galicia and is one and a half mile long. Patos is a surfer’s paradise where they can enjoy with their boards and the waves during all months of the year. This is a shoreline where tourism and nature live side by side. NigránThe former is mainly linked to the beaches whilst the latter is preserved in areas such as the mouth of the Miñor River, which is a refuge for birds, amphibians and seawater flora, and the submarine areas that surround the Estelas Islands. These are preceded by the Farallóns, vanguard of Monteferro, the main mountain on this shoreline..

The traveller arriving to Nigrán 30 or 40 years ago would have found a fishing village at Panxón and little villages in the interior of the municipality that were dedicated to subsistence agriculture and cattle rearing. It is a par excellence tourist destination today, not only for Vigo citizens, some of whom have their summer residences here, but also for the thousands of summer tourists who flock to the place from June to September. They arrive seduced by its beaches, sea, excellent gastronomy, contact with nature and well-known entertainment for young and old alike.

Nigrán’s orography is characterised by low lands along the coast, except for Monteferro, and a sinuous relief in the interior parishes, where the mountains, though not really very high, shelter from dominant winter winds and soften winter temperatures. The irregularity of the terrain provides good vantage points, which one can access through mountain paths, such as for example the ones at Monte dos Mouros and Monte do Castro.Nigrán

The presence of man has been accredited since prehistoric times as pointed out by the Chandebrito Celtic settlement. What is really noteworthy about Nigran´s monumental heritage is that is has monuments right from early times, such as the said Celtic settlement, to the 20th century, where there are two civil and religious heritages worth mentioning. The first one is the monument to Universal Seafaring, which is located at Monteferro and is the work of the architect Mr. Manuel Gómez Román. It was inaugurated in 1913 and pays homage to the four seafaring traditions namely: the navy, fishing, merchant navy and sports represented by four bronze crowns and it has an image of the Virgin Carmen, the patron saint of seafarers. The second one is the Votive Temple in Panxón, one of the most singular works of the Porriño architect Antonio Palacios. The style is half-way between regionalist but with an oriental touch, which is highlighted in the profile of the building and also in its interior decoration. Furthermore, there are Romanesque and Baroque style parish churches. Just a stone throw from the temple designed by Palacios, a Visigothic arch serves as a reminder of building activity during the Middle Ages, a lot before the Cister and Cluny religious orders brought to this end of Europe the Romanesque and Gothic styles, which were the predominant artistic trends during the first centuries of the second millennium.

NigránHowever, there is yet another type of architecture that stands out in Nigrán, namely; the stately architecture, of nobles and aristocrats that settled in parishes belonging to this town in stately manors and mansions. There are nine stately houses catalogued, to which we have to add the Abbatial house at San Fiz in Nigrán, which was built in the 17th century and which enabled the church parish priest to live like one of the big Lords that lived in the other nine houses: Cea, Brito, Robaleira, Torre de Menéndez, Lamelas, Torres Brancas, Casa de Arias, Touza and Cadaval.
