Mos is a town that is part of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Vigo and also lies within the Terras da Louriña, the Louro valley. The Louro, a tributary of the river Miño, crosses the municipality from Northeast to Southwest. The town has a population of 14,000 inhabitants spread out over an area of 53.2 square kilometers and distributed around ten parishes: Cela, Dornelas, Guizán, Louredo, Mos, Pereiras, Petelos, Sanguiñeda, Tameiga and Torroso.
From a geographic point of view, Mos has a heterogeneous territory. It includes highlands with mountainous relief around Puxeiros, Peinador and towards the tail end of Galleiro, and lowlands, which border the Louro River, especially around the parish of Louredo. The climate is benign, with fogs during the mornings along the river course and hot summers where temperatures do not reach extremes.
Just as the relief and the river course define the physical geography of the place, the human geography is conditioned by two main roadways that pass through Mos, namely; the N550 (Ferrol-Tui), which enters Mos at Redondela and leaves it at Porriño, and the N120 (Vigo-Logroño), which crosses from Puxeiros to the limits with Porriño. A secondary network of local roads forms the communications network fabric. Peinador airport lies within the areas of Redondela, Vigo and Mos, and has been one of the driving forces of development in this town, where industrial land provided a great economic force, especially after the decade of the seventies with the installation of several ancillary industries related to the automotive and shipbuilding industries.
The rural identity of Mos did not wane despite it becoming industrialized and its proximity to Vigo, and a high percentage of its population is occupied in the secondary sector. The landscape is mostly that of a rural town with little settlements spread out over its ten parishes. They are full of interesting ethnographic elements such as water mills and granaries, little parish churches, many of which are Romanesque, and paths that takes us along riverbanks and ascend up to the highest points within the territory.
In order to trace back the history of Mos, we need to go back in time to the Iron and Bronze ages to find the first signs of human settlements. These are evident through the archaeological sites at Torroso, Petelos, Guizán and practically in all of its parishes. Burial tombs, Celtic houses and dolmens are just some examples of the prehistoric remains that one can find in this town.
During the Middle Ages, Mos was on the Portuguese Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago de Compostela, which explains the great religious architectural heritage. However, this is also a route for exchange of goods between Pontevedra and Tui, the cities between which Mos lies.
From the end of the Modern era, Mos enjoys the condition of marquessate, through a title conferred upon Gabriel de Quirós. This title meant the inclusion amongst the noblest men of Spain starting with the fourth Marquis of Mos, Benito Correa e Sarmiento. The aristocratic manor house of Mos, now restored, was the residence of this noble family, which achieved four marquisates at one time: Mos, Valadares, Vega de Armijo and Ayerbe.
The railway arrived at the end of the 19th century and communications became a lot faster, especially in the parishes of the Louro valley, where the rail route follows the course of the river. Before the end of the second decade of the 20th century, a secondary railway line joined the communications network, which was intended to go from Mondariz to Vigo but stayed only between Vigo and O Porriño, and which crosses Mos from Peinador to Porriño.
The lack of industrial land in Vigo facilitated the economic and industrial expansion of Mos and converted it into a prosperous town, which despite the same did not renounce to the conservation of its natural, ethnographic and architectural heritages.
