This town with an extension of 74.5 square kilometres is situated in the Miñor valley, where the Miñor River passes through its territory to within a few kilometres from the river mouth. Gondomar has a population of more than 12,500 inhabitants. The capital of this town has a full schedule of activities throughout the year, especially in the summer months because of its proximity to the beaches in Nigran and Baiona, and its easy road access to Vigo and Portugal. Besides the capital, Gondomar also has little villages spread out over the nine parishes of the town: Borreiros, Chaín, Couso, Donas, Mañufe, Morgadáns, Peitieiros, Vilaza and Vincios.
Historically, this has been a land that was inhabited since ancient times as evidenced by the pre-historic remains found at the several archaeological sites. The town gained prominence after the onset of the Modern era thanks to personalities like Diego Sarmiento de Acuña, Count of Gondomar, a diplomat who was a very influential person during his time and was the first Spanish ambassador in the English court.
The mild climate favours agriculture and cattle farming. Its proximity to the ports of Vigo and Baiona facilitated movement of goods and therefore the sizeable concentration of aristocratic houses and stately manors such as that of the already mentioned Count of Gondomar, Villarés and Barreiros, to mention a few.
The landscape in Gondomar is divided into two well defined areas. The lowlands that follow the course of the river Miñor and the uneven relief at the limits with the municipalities of Nigrán, Tomiño and Vigo, with which it shares the highest summit in the region, namely Mount Galiñeiro.

Gondomar is currently a residential town, which is convenient, quiet, with good communications, with good public services and accommodation. The lovely nature at Galiñeiro and along the river Miñor, the paths and sports like horse riding comprise an attractive offer for the tourist that arrives to this little town at any time of the year.
