Fornelos forms the rooftop of the Greater Metropolitan Area, since its territory has the highest peaks in the region: Outeiro Vello (1,007 m) and Couto Minuto (1,059 m). The place name Fornelos de Montes did not come up by chance either, since a part of the 83 square kilometres of its geography are in the SuÃdo mountains, the most important mountainous massif that borders the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra. This is also the town with the lowest population density in the entire Greater Metropolitan Area: 24 inhabitants/ km2, which amount to a population of just two thousand persons, who are distributed over seven parishes: Fornelos, Calvos, As Estacas, A Laxe, Oitavén, Traspielas and VentÃn.
The most important rivers that pass through its territory, namely; the Barragán and the Oitavén are born in the SuÃdo Mountains. The river Barragán ends its short life span in Eiras, in a reservoir and a dam bearing the same name, which was built in the 1970s to provide water to the city of Vigo. The river Oitavén does not flow into the sea either, since it flows into the river Verdugo in Soutomaior.
The numerous archaeological sites that have been discovered in Fornelos tell us about ancient human settlements there. Living conditions were never ideal for the settlers and there never was a high demographic pressure in these lands, where lifestyles were developed around cattle herding in the highlands and agriculture in the low lands.
The density of architectural heritage was also low in line with the low density population, and consisted of parish churches, the Alemparte fort tower and rural Galician architecture that were enriched by a wide ethnographic heritage made up of stone crosses, petos de animas, water mills, wolf dens, huts and parideiras. The visitor nevertheless has ample reasons to visit these highlands where the natural and scenic heritage is top class. The peaks of the SuÃdo Mountains, the woodlands and the course of the rivers Barragán and Oitaven are authentic natural reserves, where lichens stuck to the barks of trees provide testimony of the purity of the environment where there is an abundance of animals and fish.
