The GR 58 or “Sendeiro das Greas” is the largest Galician path. It has a circular trace of 250 kilometres long, which goes around all the towns in the Vigo area.
Traveling through the whole path takes approximately 70 hours. It begins in Vigo airport, and crosses the following towns: Redondela, Soutomaior, Fornelos de Montes, Pazos de Borbén, Mos, Ponteareas, O Porriño, Salceda de Caselas, Tui, Gondomar, Baiona and Nigrán, finishing at last in Vigo.
There are plenty of environmental tourist attractions in this path, which crosses beautiful spots, also provided with some good examples of popular architecture. In this way, we must emphasize the mills at Devesa, an oak wood in a place called Barragán, the riverside forest in Couñago, some old wolf traps, the riverside forest along the Borbén river, the Zamáns river and the mills called “As Maquías”, the Miñor marsh, the coast of Baiona with its cliffs, the Oliveira wood… We must not forget some important constructions which enables us to understand the culture in these lands, such as the megalithic structures in Monte Penide and the archaeological sites of Mámoa do Rei and Chandebrito, the castle of Soutomaior and several singular buildings as the palaces of Pegullal, Aballe and Picoña, in Salceda de Caselas.
Furthermore, a great variety of popular buildings and all kinds of cultural elements and the unequalled beauty of landscapes, the viewpoints of this path reveal us the best spots in South Pontevedra. Following clockwise we can see San Simón inlet, the Oitavén river canyon, the valley of the Borbén River, the Baiona inlet, the Monteferro peninsula with the Cíes Islands as backdrop. These islands belong to the new National Park of the Atlantic Islands.
The mountains appear over the Serras do Suído, O Galiñeiro and A Groba as silent guards of the trail.
This is an exceptional, enjoyable and complete path as well as long route, worthy of being enjoyed to know deeply this wonderful area in the Pontevedra province.
