 | Route of the Candeán Burial Grounds (Mámoas)
Date: Mesolithic period Council: Vigo Localization: Candeán Candeán has the highest concentration of burial grounds in the whole of Vigo. Together with the burial grounds of Teis between Madroa and Vixiador, as well as with those from Redondela at Mount Penide, we can say that this is one of the greatest areas of archaeological remains in Galicia from that period. A hiking route was created with the initiative of residents and with the support of the Vigo Council, that passes through the eleven burial sites that can still be visited. The itinerary is marked with explanatory panels and it starts next to the building of the Residents Cultural Association of Candeán. The route then passes near the private cemetery and finally goes towards the Forest Park. Next to the canteen there, we can find the Vixiador burial grounds. The route starts near the Candeán Cultural Centre and continues to the Vixiador Forest Park. One passes through eleven burial grounds: four at Chan dos Touciños, three at Costa FreirÃa, two at Ferradouro, and another two called the Mámoa do Chan de Labrador and the Mámoa del Vixiador. Work is underway to declare these burial grounds as Assets of Cultural Interest. |
