 | The Pilgrim's Route to Santiago
Date: From the 11th century onwards Council: Redondela Localization: Two stretches of the Portuguese Pilgrim's Route to Santiago enter here: Saxamonde and Chapela, which meet at Redondela. The Portuguese Route has always bifurcated into two throughout history. One of these goes through the interior and reaches Valença do Minho, crosses the river Miño at Tui, and then continues to Porriño and finishes its trajectory in Redondela. The second route, also known as the coastal route, traverses an ancient Roman route in part, called the per vÃa romana, per loca maritima. It passes through Caminha, goes to A Guarda, Baiona, Nigrán, Vigo and from there continues to Chapela before arriving at Redondela, where both Pilgrim's Routes join and continue as one up to Compostela. The Portuguese Pilgrim's Route to Santiago, which is ramified in Portuguese territory, joins together in Redondela, the end of a stretch where there is a pilgrim's shelter at the Casa da Torre. |
